3/8/2015 8:52:00 PM | Softball
Seven different Mastodon players collected a hit on the night, including four with multiple hits. Taylor Gordy Prescott, Lindsay Burke, Prestlee Cooper, and Caitlyn DeLong all had two hits. All four players, along with Whitney Ennis, scored a run. Jenna Balthazor drove in a pair of runs.
The Mastodons scored first in the opener against Morehead State. In the top of the first, Gordy Prescott led off the game with a single to left, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Morghyn Neal.
The Eagles tied the game in the fourth with a sacrifice fly of their own. Ennis led off the top of the fifth, singling through the left side. Two outs later, Ennis scored on a double to left center by Balthazor. The Morehead State leadoff batter in the bottom half of the inning quickly tied the game with a second-pitch home run.
The Eagles took the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs on a two-out triple.
Lindsey Burke singled with one out in the seventh to begin the Mastodon rally. Gordy Prescott followed with a single as both runners later advanced on a wild pitch. Balthazor brought home Burke with an RBI groundout and putting the tying run on third. IPFW was unable to push across the tying run as the final out was recorded.
Kaitlin Kowalski took the loss in the circle for the 'Dons, allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings. She struck out three while surrendering six hits.
Game two saw Cooper get things going with a one-out single in the second. She stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Avery Nelson.
The Camels took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run single. The lead was short lived as DeLong took a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall in the fourth for the Mastodon's first home run of the season and the second of her career.
Campbell scored the game-winning runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-run double to left.
Kaitlyn Biere suffered the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out one Camel batter.
IPFW returns to the field beginning March 13 for the three-day Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana.
