
Women's Tennis Sweeps Saturday, Takes Third Straight Match

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's tennis team won its second and third straight match, winning 7-0 over Green Bay and 6-1 over Butler on Saturday afternoon at the Empowered Sports Club.
The win improves IPFW to 10-4 on the season, and sets up an important battle on Sunday morning against nationally ranked DePaul University.
"Our team competed well in a tough environment," said IPFW head coach Eric Burns. "There were many fans supporting Butler because they have a Fort Wayne player on their team, but we did a good job of taking them out of the match early through our solid doubles play. This was one of our most complete matches of the season, and I'm very proud of these wins and our team."
In the opener against Green Bay, the Mastodons made quick work of the doubles point with 6-1 wins by the No. 3 pair of Sara Sherif and Alina Schibol and the No. 2 doubles pair of Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino. The No.1 ,doubles match featuring the Mastodon pair of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato needed extra time, but remained undefeated on the weekend with a 7-6 win.
Sherif picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, before Sofia Sorokina won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to put IPFW ahead 3-0. Sato clinched the match for IPFW with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Schibol took the match at No. 2 singles by a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 score, and was followed by wins from Huck (6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles) and Emily Richardson (6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles).
Later that evening against the Bulldogs, the Mastodons opened the match with a pair of doubles victories, the first coming at No. 2 pairs from Lindal and Trevino by a 6-1 score, before Schibol and Sherif closed the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 pairs. The No. 1 doubles team of Huck and Sato were leading 5-3 before the match went unfinished.
Trevino opened singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, before Sorokina won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. for the second straight match, Sato, the defending Summit League Player of the Year, clinched the match for the Mastodons with a 6-2, 7-6 battle at No. 1 singles.,
Butler picked up its only win in the match at No. 2 singles, before Sherif won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Huck picked up a 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 6 to give the match its 6-1 final score.
