FORT WAYNE, IND. – Day one of the 2015 Summit League Indoor Championships for IPFW track and field were highlighted by two broken records and a pair of near misses of two additional program bests.
Freshman Jenna Quillen started off the day on a strong note for the Mastodons by scoring 2,822 points in the Pentathlon. The total was a personal-best for Quillen and was just 14 points off the school record in the event.
Fellow freshman Kiawna Cottrell, who has been phenomenal for the 'Dons this season, began her first championships in the 60 meter preliminaries and posted a time of 7.87, which was just one-one hundredth of a second off her own program record of 7.86 in the event. The near miss was a mute point however, as Cottrell performed even better in the semifinals with a time of 7.80, shattering the old mark and advancing to Saturday's finals.
Cottrell also competed in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash, setting a new school record in the event with a time of 25.80, breaking the old mark of 25.84 that she set at the Akron Invitational in early February. The first-year athlete continued her season-long trend of breaking IPFW records as she has set a new school-best in every meet she has competed in with the exception of one.
Sophomore Brittany Beard—IPFW's top middle-distance runner—had a solid day in her best event, the 800-meter dash, with a time of 2:14.75 and a sixth-place among the qualifiers. The mark was just shy of the program record of 2:14.65 that she set a week ago at the Ball State Open and was good enough to move her on to the finals on Saturday.
Freshman Elise Cobb participated in the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 1:05.47 that tied both her personal and season-bests.
The first day of the league championships concluded with the distance medley relay, with IPFW's foursome of Emily Roman, Tori Nida, Breanna Fensler and Brittany Fensler recording a time of 13:10.90.
In addition to the final for the 60 meter dash and the 800 meter run, the 'Dons will compete in the mile, the 5,000 meter run, the 4x400 meter relay and the high jump.
The second and final day of the championships will kick off at 9:30 am CT on Saturday morning.
