Mastodons Drop Final Game of Mercer Invitational
2/8/2015 7:49:00 PM | Softball
Olszewski ended the weekend leading the team with a .455 batting average with five hits in 11 at-bats. She also led the 'Dons with four runs scored and an on-base percentage of .571. Morghyn Neal also collected five hits over the weekend and added an RBI.
Caitlyn DeLong connected on four hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run. Avery Nelson finished with three hits in eight plate appearances for the Mastodons. Miranda Marion also had a pair of hits and an RBI.
In the top of the first against the Crusaders, IPFW put a runner in scoring position with a pair of two-out hits from Olszewski and Neal but the 'Dons were unable to push a run across. Valparaiso scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second with a two-out single.
Valpo added to its lead in the third with three runs before scoring two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth.
With one out in the sixth, the Mastodon bats picked up with back-to-back singles by Olszewski and Neal. After Marion reached on a Crusader error to load the bases, DeLong singled to right field scoring Olszewski. The rally would stall there as the next two IPFW batters were retired.
In the bottom of the sixth, Valparaiso ended the game with a two-run home run by Kaitlyn Ranieri.
All three IPFW pitchers saw action in the circle. Sarah Lazarowich started and took her second loss of the season, allowing four runs in three innings while striking out two Crusaders. Kaitlin Kowalski came on to pitch two innings of relief and allow three runs, two earned, on just one hit. Kaitlyn Biere came on for the sixth inning, but did not record an out in allowing two runs.
IPFW returns to the field on February 13 against Colorado State at noon ET for the opening game of the Texas Classic. All five IPFW games during the tournament will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.
