Multiple Mastodons Have Career Night in Win over Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – The 14th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team fought to a four set win at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday night. The Mastodons finished 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23, improving to 12-6 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 6-8.
Three 'Dons earned double-digit kills, highlighted by Alex Harthaller's 22 and Andrew Sellan's 20. Tony Price set a new career high with 13 kills, hitting .320, while Harthaller finished the night hitting .375. Additionally, Jordan Armstrong set a new career high with 59 assists.
The Blue and White took an early 8-5 lead over the Crusaders, but Belmont Abbey would answer with five-straight points. The teams would trade points, being knotted at 14 all, before the Crusaders went on another run, this time earning four-straight. The 'Dons would fight back, earning a slime 23-22 edge late in the opening set, but the Crusaders battled to earn the last three points, taking the set 25-23. The opening set saw the lead tied 11 times with three lead changes as Harthaller led the way for the 'Dons with seven kills.
Both teams swapped the first 12 points of the match, being knotted at six, before the Crusaders jumped to a 10-7 lead. IPFW answered with four-straight points, eventually taking a 21-17 advantage late in the set. Belmont Abbey tried to get back in the set, cutting the lead to 21-19, but the 'Dons would eventually put the set away 25-22. The Blue and White hit a combined .314 in the second set, led by Sellan's seven kills.
IPFW jumped to an 11-7 lead midway through the third set and refused to relinquish the lead. The Crusaders would cut the lead to one point multiple times, but the 'Dons would take the set 25-22. Harthaller once again earned seven kills in a set, while Price recorded six. Sellan finished the third set with four digs, as the team hit a combined .312.

The Crusaders would take a 17-12 lead later in the set, but IPFW continued to fight back, earning a 7-1 run and take a 22-20 lead late, eventually taking the final set 25-23. Sellan led the 'Dons with seven kills in the set, while Harthaller earned four digs.
For the match, IPFW held a 65-43 advantage in kills, along with a 61-39 upper hand in assists. The Crusaders edged the Blue and White 37-35 in digs, while the Mastodons held a 5-0 advantage in aces.
