Soat Knocks in Four in Mastodon Series Win
3/15/2015 4:56:00 PM | Baseball
Brandon Soat was 2-for-5 on the day, while Greg Kaiser was 2-for-5 including a second-inning solo home run. Jon Timmermen and Shane Trevino each scored twice in the game.
Western Illinois - for the third time in as many games of the series - struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring a pair of runs aided by two IPFW errors.
The Mastodons answered back with Kaiser's solo home run in the second inning, before scoring three times in the third, the first two on a two-run Soat single, before Trevino reached on a fielder's choice to score Soat.
The eventual game-winning runs came an inning later when Soat doubled to left-center field, scoring Timmermen and Shannon Baker, giving IPFW the 5-2 advantage.,
The Mastodons tacked on a run in the top of the fifth inning when Trevino scored on a Leatherneck fielding error, and reached their final run total in the seventh inning when Trevino scored on a wild pitch.
Western Illinois added a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the six-run margin was too much to overcome as IPFW improved to 11-6 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Miller pitched six strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs - one earned - striking out eight and walking none. Brandon Pease picked up a three-inning save, allowing four hits and two runs - just one earned - while striking out one.
The Mastodons return to action on March 20 when the team travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to take on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in each squads' second Summit League series of the season.
