VanSumeren went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI's, while the team's remaining five hits came from five different players. Van Sumeren drove in three while Kendall Whitman drove in two while scoring twice.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Mastodons struck first when Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece singled, which was followed by a Jackson Boyce walk to put runners on first and second. VanSumeren followed with a single to center field to score Valenzuela-Reece. A lineout double play put two outs on the board before Whitman slammed a two-run home run over the right field wall, pushing the Mastodons to a 3-0 advantage.
Oral Roberts wasted little time in answering back, putting up four runs in the bottom of the third inning, before adding three more in the fourth and two more - including the eventual game-winner - in the fifth inning.
IPFW tacked on four runs in the top of the sixth, the first when Valenzuela-Reece drew a bases-loaded walk, which was followed with a Boyce single that scored Brock Logan. VanSumeren followed with a two-run single, cutting the gap to two at 9-7.
The Golden Eagles pushed across five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the game its 14-7 final score.
Trevor Storie picked up the loss, pitching 3.2 innings on the mound, giving up seven hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out two. Kyle Sorensen pitched two and a thirds inning in relief, while Zach Dowden and Cody O'Neal each pitched an inning.
The team return to action on Saturday afternoon in a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Golden Eagles.
