Mastodons Fall in Middle Game of Series to Golden Eagles
3/21/2015 6:23:00 PM | Baseball
Three players - Kendall Whitman, Shane Trevino, and Jackson Boyce - each had three hits in the game, while Evan VanSumeren and Brock Logan each had two. VanSumeren scored twice, while each of the team's four RBI's came from a different batter.
The Mastodons struck first, using five base hits to score three runs, the first on a Trevino single that scored VanSumeren, before Logan answered a batter later, driving in Logan. After another single and line-out, Trevino scored on a passed ball, giving IPFW a 3-0 lead.
After Oral Roberts countered with a run in the bottom of the first, neither team would be able to score for the next two and a half innings. With the Mastodons holding onto a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles erupted for six runs in the frame, including the eventual game-winner, to push ahead to a 7-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning IPFW cut the deficit in half after back-to-back RBI singles from Brandon Soat and Whitman scoring Boyce and VanSumeren, respectively. The Golden Eagles wasted no time in adding to their lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth, before securing an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the game its 10-5 final score.
Ryan Wells picked up the loss on the mound, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) over 3.1 innings of work. Wells struck out four batters, and surrendered three walks. Nate White pitched two-thirds of an inning, striking out one before Dane Davis finished out the game for the Mastodons, striking out one and scattering six hits and three runs over four innings.
The Mastodons did most of their work offensively against Xavier Altamirano, who earlier this week was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week but lasted just four and a third of an inning with just two strikeouts and 11 hits allowed.
The teams return to action on Sunday afternoon for the third and final game of the three-game series. The two teams will meet again for a second three-game series in early May.
