Mastodons Fall in Series Finale to Golden Eagles
3/22/2015 8:10:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW was held to a series-low five hits, as each of the team's hits came from a different batter, as was each of the team's runs and each of their RBI's.
The hosts scored once in the first and once more in the third to push ahead 2-0 after three innings.
IPFW cut the gap in half in the top of the fifth inning when Greg Kaiser hit an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly out to right field and then scored on a Jackson Boyce single.
Oral Roberts answered back in the following half inning with four runs to lead 6-1. IPFW closed back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI groundout from Shane Trevino that scored Brandon Soat, and an RBI single up the middle from Brock Logan that chased home Kendall Whitman.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, the hosts scored five times in the seventh inning and once more in the eighth to take a 12-3 lead.
The Mastodons fought back with a run in the top of the ninth when a walk, error, and walk, loaded the bases, before Sean Herberger hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Grant Wilson, and giving the game its 12-4 final score.
Evan Miller picked up the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season, pitching the first four and two-thirds of an inning, scattering four hits and allowing six runs (five earned) and striking out three.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, March 24 when the team has its 2015 home opener against the Dayton Flyers.
