Brock Logan went 2-for-3 at the plate for IPFW, while Evan VanSumeren, Shane Trevino, and Greg Kaiser each went 2-for-4. Logan scored and drove in a run, as Kendall Whitman scored once and Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece drove in a run as well.
The Jackrabbits struck first in the game, scoring a run in the top of the first before adding three more in the top of the second, providing the eventual game-winning score.,
After another run in the top of the fifth put the visitors ahead 5-0, the Mastodons strung together at-bats to score their first run of the game. The frame opened with a Logan walk followed by a Kaiser double to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Valenzuela-Reece grounded out to the SDSU second baseman, driving in Logan, before another groundout ended the chance for more damage.
South Dakota State got a run back in the top of the sixth, which was answered by a two-out rally for the Mastodons, which saw Logan single to center field, scoring Whitman who singled and advanced to third on a Trevino double.
With the margin cut to 6-2, SDSU scored once more in the seventh and again in the eighth to give the game its 8-2 final score.
Trevor Storie picked up the loss on the mound, giving up nine hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out five. Kyle Sorensen and Kyle Orwig each pitched an inning in relief, with Sorensen giving up a run.
Zach Coppola went 3-for-4 for SDSU with two RBI's, as Reid Clary and Cody Sharrow each had two hits. Adam Bray picked up the win, pitching seven innings and giving up two earned runs.
The teams face off tomorrow for the second of three games in the series, with first-pitch slated for 3 p.m.
