3/28/2015 11:06:00 PM | Baseball
Evan VanSumeren and Shane Trevino each went 3-for-5 on the day, while Greg Kaiser and Lucas Salerno each were 2-for-4 at the plate. Trevino and Kaiser each scored twice while VanSumeren and Jon Timmermen each drove in a pair of runs.
South Dakota State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead through an inning and a half before the bats came alive in the bottom of the second inning, as three straight singles from Trevino, Kaiser, and Sean Herberger loaded the bases with no outs. After a pop-out, Timmermen drew a walk to push across Trevino. A strikeout followed, before VanSumeren singled to right-center field, scoring Herberger and Kaiser and giving IPFW a 3-2 lead through two innings.
A perfect top of the third followed, before the Mastodons strung together three hits in a four-batter span to score two more times, the first on a Kaiser double down the left field lead that chased home Trevino, before Kaiser scored on a Salerno single to center field.
South Dakota State wasted little time to re-take the lead, as the Jackrabbits scored five times in the top of the fourth, before adding two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.,
After SDSU finished its scoring with a run in the top of the eighth, the Mastodons rallied back, scoring a run with a Timmermen single to center field that scored Zak Kellogg, giving the game its 12-6 final score.
Ryan Wells picked up the loss on the mound for the Mastodons, striking out five in five innings, scattering eight hits over five innings and giving up eight runs - half of those earned - without allowing a walk. Dane Davies went three innings in relief, giving up three runs while Cody O'Neal pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning in relief.
The Mastodons look to take the final game of the series, which will see an 11 a.m. first pitch against the Jackrabbits.
