Mastodons Fall in Series Finale to Jackrabbits
3/29/2015 3:50:00 PM | Baseball
Five players - Brandon Soat, Brock Logan, Greg Kaiser, Zak Kellogg, and Jackson Boyce - had multiple hits, with Kaiser scoring twice as he and Soat each drove in a pair.
South Dakota State struck first in the game with a run in the top of the second, before the Mastodons answered back when Kellogg singled home Logan. The Jackrabbits scored again in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead through five full innings.
The pitcher's duel was snapped in the bottom of the sixth inning with four Mastodon runs, the first on a Salerno single that scored Kendall Whitman. After a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Boyce hit an infield single that scored Kaiser, setting the table for Soat who singled to left field to score Kellogg and Salerno, staking IPFW to a 5-2 advantage.
The Jackrabbits scored one run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 5-3 before rallying with five runs in the top of the ninth inning to push out to an 8-5 advantage.
A Kaiser two-run home run closed the Jackrabbit lead to one at 8-7; however a deep flyout and a groundout closed the door on the comeback attempt.
Evan Miller opened the game pitching 5.2 innings, striking out four and scattering four hits. The freshman gave up just two runs - one earned - and walked two. Jake Weber picked up the loss, pitching 2.2 innings in relief, striking out three, and giving up five runs (two earned). Cody O'Neal pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and giving up an unearned run.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, April 1 when the squad travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in a 3 p.m. first pitch.,
