Baseball to Battle With Boilermakers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW baseball team stays in the Hoosier state on Wednesday evening when the squad travels to West Lafayette to take on the Purdue Boilermakers.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons look to snap out of a six-game losing skid on Wednesday evening when the team faces off against the Purdue Boilermakers. IPFW's losing skid is after back-to-back Summit League sweeps against Oral Roberts and South Dakota State.
The high-powered IPFW offense comes into the game with a .297 team batting average, and led by infielder Jackson Boyce who is hitting .404. In all, seven players - Boyce, Shane Trevino (.344), Brock Logan (.343), Brandon Soat (.323), Evan VanSumeren (.317), Kendall Whitman (.313) and Greg Kaiser (.303) - hit over .300 for the season. Whitman has scored a team-best 23 times this season, with Trevino and VanSumeren scoring 21 times. Soat leads the team with eight doubles and 27 RBI's while Trevino has four triples and four home runs.
Freshman Evan Miller leads the pitching staff with 38 strikeouts in 33.2 innings, to go with his 2-1 overall record. Four different players have two victories, as Miller is joined by Trevor Storie, Ryan Wells, and Nate White. Wells is second on the team with 33 strikeouts in 29.1 innings, as Storie has struck out 20 batters on the season. Jake Weber has four of the team's five saves this spring.
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
Purdue (9-18), like IPFW comes into the game looking to snap out of its seven-game losing skid as the team was swept in three games against Butler 4-0, 13-1, and 5-3.,
The Boilermaker offense is led by Kyle Wood who is batting .355 (33-of-93) with two home runs, seven doubles, and 16 RBI's. Brandon Krieg is hitting .277 with a team-best 18 runs scored and nine doubles. Jack Picchiotti has a team-best three home runs, while driving in 14.
Shane Bryant leads the Purdue pitchers with 27 strikeouts in 30 innings on the mound, while Matt Frawley has 19 in 30.1 innings of work. Matt Gibbs leads the team with two victories, as Joe Eichmann has a pair of saves to go with 17 strikeouts in 16.2 innings this season.
LAST MEETING AGAINST PURDUE
Last season Purdue toppled IPFW 7-1 in West Lafayette, despite the Mastodons out-hitting the Boilermakers 12-to-11. Four players - Whitman, Carter DeBoe, Kristian Gayday, and Kevin Wirth - each had two hits, while Gayday also walked twice.
Purdue scored three times in the bottom of the third before adding another run in the fourth and two in the fifth. IPFW scored in the top of the seventh inning when Wirth doubled home Whitman for the team's only run. The Boilermakers added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the game its 7-1 final score.
Nate White picked up the loss, pitching the first three innings of the game, striking out three and allowing four walks and three runs. Cody O'Neal pitched three innings in relief, striking out two while Kyle Sorensen and Zach Dowden each pitched an inning with one strikeout.
