Women's Tennis Splits Home Doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's tennis team split a multi-facility home doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-2 to the Ball State Cardinals before answering back with a 6-1 win over Aquinas College.
Against Ball State, played outside at the on-campus Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center, the Mastodons and Cardinals battled in a match that was closer than the 5-2 final score would indicate.
In doubles, the Mastodons fell 6-4 at No. 2, before Alina Schibol and Sara Sherif battled to a 6-4 victory at No. 3 pairs. The No. 1 team of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato needed extra time, before falling in a tight 7-6 match.
In singles, the Cardinals struck first with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, before Sato got the Mastodons on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1. Trailing 2-1, the Mastodons fell at the next two single spots, falling 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 and 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5.,
Alina Schibol earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fort Wayne native Ashlyn Rang at No. 3 singles, before the Cardinals got a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at No. 6 singles.
In the evening finale against Aquinas, the Mastodons swept through doubles, winning by 6-2 and 6-1 final scores. Sato and Huck combined to win 6-2 at No. 1 pairs, before Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino won 6-1. Emily Richardson and Ella Norgren teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 3 pairs, giving IPFW the sweep.
Sara Sherif didn't give up a game victory at No. 4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, before a tired Schibol fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Trevino then brought home a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 to put the Mastodons ahead 3-1.
Sato proved to be the deciding victory for IPFW, winning 6-3, 6-4 in a hard-fought match at No. 1 singles. Sofia Sorokina needed straight sets to win 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, as the match was given its final score following a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.,
After a three-game homestretch, the Mastodons - now 15-6 on the season - take to the road for the next five matches, including an upcoming weekend trip to Western New York, with matches at St. Bonaventure and Niagara, both on March 27.
