
Women's Tennis Sweeps Weekend in Western New York

NIAGARA, N.Y. - The IPFW women's tennis team improved to 17-6 on the season with a sweep of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and the Niagara Eagles on Friday afternoon, winning 6-1 over St. Bonaventure and 5-2 over Niagara.
"The team fought extremely hard today through a tough day of tennis," said IPFW head coach Eric Burns. "This team has a lot of mental toughness and are really showing amazing effort."
In the opening match of the weekend, the Mastodons swept through doubles, with the pair of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato winning 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, before Ella Norgren and Carlota Trevino won 8-5 at No. 2 pairs. With the doubles point already in hand, the No. 3 doubles match was stopped with Sara Sherif and Alina Schibol leading 7-5.
Sato stayed undefeated on the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Trevino won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3. Sherif needed three sets for her 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
Sofia Sorokina won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles against the Bonnies, as Huck picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6.
In the afternoon finale, the Mastodons once again gained the doubles point, opening with a 6-3 win from Sato and Huck at No. 1. Sherif and Schibol combined for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, as the No. 2 pairs match was stopped with the team point already in hand.
Sato closed out her perfect weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, before Trevino picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Wins at No. 4 from Sofia Sorokina (6-3, 6-3) and at No. 5 from Sara Sherif (7-5, 6-3) gave the Mastodons their five points for the match.
The team next travels to take on the Denver Pioneers on April 1, before matches at Omaha (April 3) and South Dakota (April 4).
