PEORIA, Ill. - The IPFW women's tennis team shrugged off a loss to 38th ranked DePaul in its last outing by toppling the Missouri Valley's Bradley Braves by a 5-2 count on Saturday afternoon, improving to 11-5 on the season.
"The team played great today," said head tennis coach Eric Burns. "Bradley is an excellent team, but we fought hard and were very sharp in doubles. The doubles point got us off to a great start, and set the tone for the remainder of the match."
The Mastodons got doubles victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, with Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino teaming up for a 6-1 win at No. 2 pairs, while Sara Sherif and Alina Schibol won 6-2 at No. 3. The only doubles blemish came in a hard-fought 6-3 loss at No. 1 doubles from Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato.
Sato and Huck each rebounded from their doubles losses with singles wins, as Sato won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, while Huck won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
Trevino and Sofia Sorokina also picked up Mastodon wins, Trevino by a 7-5, 6-1 score at No. 3, and Sorokina won when her opponent retired with the Mastodon junior leading 6-4, 2-1.
Schibol (6-0, 6-1 at No. 2) and Sherif (6-2, 6-4 at No. 5) were the only singles losses for the Mastodons on the day.
The Mastodons return to action on Monday afternoon when the team travels to Springfield, Missouri, to take on the Missouri State Bears in a 2 p.m. start.
