Mastodons Unable to Comeback at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. – The 14th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to come from behind as Erskine took the match in three sets. The Mastodons finished 22-25, 22-25, 24-26, falling to 11-6, while the Fleet improve to 12-3.
Despite double-digit kills from Andrew Sellan, the Blue and White were unable to complete a come from behind win on the road. Sellan earned 19 kills, hitting .394, while Alex Harthaller led the way defensively with nine digs.
After going down 4-2 early in the first set, the 'Dons clawed back, going on a 6-2 run to take an early 10-8 advantage in the opening set. The Fleet would not go away, as Erskine earned three-straight points later in the match, taking a 17-15 lead. Both teams would exchange points for the remainder of the set, before Erskine wrapped it up 25-22. The first set saw the score tied nine times with three lead changes.
The second set began in similar fashion to the first as Erskine took a 4-2 lead early on before IPFW came back with three-straight points, taking a 5-4 lead. The teams would battle on, being knotted at 17 apiece, but the Fleet would take control with the next five points. The 'Dons would fight back, but eventually fall 25-22 in the second set. IPFW and Erskine shared a tie 16 times during the set, with six lead changes.
The final set was fought just as closely as the first two, as the Mastodons and Fleet were knotted at 13 midway through. The Blue and White would go on a 7-2 run, taking a 20-15 lead late in the set. However, Erskine answered with a 9-2 run to wrap up the set 26-24.
For the match, Erskine edged IPFW 28-27 in digs and 6-5 in blocks. The match saw both teams tied 35 times with 14 lead changes.
The Mastodons continue a three-match Carolina swing as they travel to Belmont Abbey on March 10 at 7 p.m.
