Softball Drops Doubleheader to Broncos

Marion led the team on the day going 3 for 6 at the dish and driving in both runs of game two. Taylor Gordy Prescott notched a pair of hits on the afternoon and scored a run. Prestlee Cooper and Jenna Balthazor each added a double and a run scored for the 'Dons.
In the opener, the Broncos tallied four runs in the top of the first. IPFW responded with its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Gordy Prescott reached on an infield single and promptly stole second. Marion followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After Marion stole second, Gordy Prescott scored on a ground out by Avery Nelson.
Kelly Pevely added a single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth for the Mastodons, but the team was unable to record a hit in the final two innings.
Western Michigan scored a run in the second, third and fifth innings before plating seven in the top of the sixth.
Kaitlyn Biere suffered the loss after tossing 5 2/3 innings and striking out a pair of batters. Sarah Lazarowich came on to record the final out of the sixth.
IPFW fell behind early in game two as WMU scored four runs in the first, nine in the second, and three more in the third.
The 'Dons got on the board in the bottom of the third with two outs. Balthazor doubled down the left field line and Gordy Prescott followed with a single. Marion brought home Balthazor with a single to left.
The Broncos responded by adding two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Mastodons capped off the scoring with a final run. Cooper led off the inning with a double to left field. Two outs later, Marion delivering on her second hit of the game, a single to right center, allowing Cooper to score from second.
Starting In the circle for the 'Dons Kaitlin Kowalski went 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit while walking seven and allowing seven runs, five earned. Lazarowich came on in relief for the final 3 2/3 innings.
IPFW returns to the field for a doubleheader against Summit League foe IUPUI on April 3 with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
