Mastodons Fall to High-Powered Omaha Offense

Evan VanSumeren was 2-for-3 at the plate for IPFW, while driving in a pair of runs. The team's other five hits, and all three runs came from different players.
After two scoreless innings, the Omaha offense erupted, going on a stretch between two innings in which the team was 10-of-11 at the plate, as the visitors stretched to a 9-0 lead two innings later.,
In the bottom of the fifth the Mastodon offense came alive, with Greg Kaiser opening the inning with an infield single before Shannon Baker singled to left field. Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece followed with a single to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Jackson Boyce hit a sacrifice fly to left field to end the shutout, before VanSumeren singled to left-center field to score Baker and Reece.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Omaha scored two runs in the seventh and eighth, giving the game its 13-3 final score.
Ryan Wells picked up the loss, lasting three and a third inning, striking out three but giving up nine runs. Kyle Sorensen pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief, before Dane Davis pitched two and Brandon Pease one inning in relief.
The teams meet up for the series-deciding game on Sunday afternoon, in a 1 p.m. first pitch at Mastodon Field.
