
Baseball Hosts Omaha for Three-Game Series

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW baseball team will look to continue its stretch of three wins in its last four games, as the squad hosts the Omaha Mavericks on the weekend in a crucial Summit League series for the Mastodons.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons have won their most recent Summit League series, taking 2-of-3 from the North Dakota State Bison, and have won three of their last four overall games.
The IPFW offense has seven of its regulars hitting at .300 or better, led by Jackson Boyce, who is batting .369 for the year. Shane Trevino (.327), Brock Logan (.325), Brandon Soat (.322), Greg Kaiser (.320), Evan VanSumeren (.317), and Kendall Whitman (.306), also hit over .300 for the season. Whitman has scored a team-best 26 times, as he has also drawn 14 walks and has been hit by pitch 12 times for a .448 on-base percentage. VanSumeren leads the team with 10 doubles while Trevino has four triples and five home runs, tops on the squad. Soat has knocked in a team-best 34 runs, as eight different Mastodons have double-figure RBI totals, and nine with double-figure run totals on the season.
Ryan Wells has a team-best three wins, while also leading the team with a 5.63 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 38.1 innings of work. Evan Miller has struck out 40 batters in 38.0 innings of work to go with his 2-2 record and 5.68 ERA, as Trevor Storie has a 2-4 record and a 5.65 ERA with 26 strikeouts in a team-best 43.0 innings. Jake Weber has a 2-1 record with four saves at the back end of the IPFW bullpen, leading the team's relievers with 22 strikeouts in 19 innings on the mound.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Omaha heads into the weekend looking to snap out of its slump in which the team has fall in six of its last eight games, including a 10-2 loss against Kansas Sate on Wednesday evening.
Leading the Maverick offense has been Cole Gruber, who is batting .407 with a team-high 15 stolen bases and a .513 on-base percentage. Alex Schultz is also hitting over .300 on the season at .344, while scoring 26 times and driving in a dozen runs. Four other batters, Justin Threlkeld (.297), Daniel Jewett (.294), Alex Mortensen (.283), and Clayton Taylor (.278), are hitting over .275 on the season. Taylor leads the team with 30 runs scored, while Mortensen has driven in 27 in 29 games.
The pitching staff is led by its three weekend starters, as Tyler Fox is 4-2 with a 3.27 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 44.0 innings of work. Zach Williamsen leads the team with 32 strikeouts in 45.2 innings, to go with a 4-4 overall record and 3.94 ERA. Cole Volkers has a team-best three saves and a 1-1 record in nine appearances out of the bullpen.
