The win improves IPFW to 15-14 on the season, and 5-8 in Summit League play, while Omaha falls to 15-15 on the season and 8-5 in League action.
Brandon Soat went 4-for-5 at the plate on the day, as Brock Logan was 2-for-2 and Greg Kaiser 2-for-4. Logan drove in three runners, as Shane Trevino chased home two. Soat scored twice, with the team's other five runs coming from five different batters.
Trevor Storie picked up the victory, improving to 3-4 on the season, while Jake Weber picked up his fifth save of the season.
Omaha opened strong, scoring a run in both the first and third innings, before pushing out with three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 5-0 after four innings.
The Mastodon deficit remained through the bottom of the fifth inning, where the team got a walk from Jackson Boyce, a Soat single, and a VanSumeren walk to load the bases. With two outs on the board, Trevino singled to right field, chasing home Soat and Boyce, before Logan took the first pitch he saw in the inning and put it over the wall in right field, as the Mastodons turned a 5-0 deficit into a 5-5 tie after just two plate appearances.,
IPFW added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the first when VanSumeren singled home Zak Kellogg, who opened the inning with a single. Kendall Whitman followed a batter later scoring Soat with a single to center field, putting the Mastodons ahead 7-5.
Omaha challenged in the top of the eighth inning, using a single to cut the gap to one at 7-6, before Jon Timmermen snared a hot shot down the third base line, jumped to his feet and threw to first for the third out, keeping the momentum with the Mastodons, before a 1-2-3 top of the ninth gave IPFW the victory.
The teams return to action on Saturday, April 11, in a 2 p.m. first pitch at Mastodon Field.
