4/18/2015 9:23:00 PM | Baseball
Three players - Shane Trevino, Zak Kellogg, and Jon Timmermen - had two hits in the game, while Evan VanSumeren scored twice and Trevino drove in a pair. Evan Miller picked up the victory to improve to 5-2 on the season, striking out nine over six innings of work, as Dane Davis and Cody O'Neal pitched scoreless innings in relief.
The win improves the Mastodons to 20-16 on the season and 9-9 in Summit League play while Western Illinois falls to 10-24 and 5-13 in league play.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Leathernecks pushed a run across in the top of the third inning when the team strung together an inning-opening walk and a double to put runners on second and third, before J.J. Reimer hit a run-scoring single; however, that would be all the visitors would score as Miller got the remaining to batters to strike out and fly out.
A full inning later IPFW took a lead for good, as Brandon Soat opened the inning with a single, and after a fielder's choice, Kendall Whitman was hit by a pitch, before Trevino walked to load the bases. A Brock Logan walk pushed the tying run across the board, before Greg Kaiser hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Whitman, the eventual game-winning run.
After a half-inning that saw just a single for WIU, Kellogg opened the inning with a single, before Timmermen hit an infield single. A fielder's choice eliminated Timmermen, but put Soat on first base, and have runners on the corners with one out. VanSumeren followed with a run-scoring double, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Whitman. That was followed by a Trevino single that pushed VanSumeren across the plate.
Trevino drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh with a single that scored Timmermen, before Kaiser hit a one-out triple in the eighth inning before scoring on a wild pitch.
Western Illinois threatened in the top of the ninth inning with a hit by pitch, single, and walk loaded the bases, before reliever Cody O'Neal got the final out via a looking strikeout to secure the 7-1 victory.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, April 21, when the team hosts Holy Cross (Ind.) in a 3 p.m. first pitch at Mastodon Field.
