Burgos’ Career Night Helps Mastodons Squeak by Antelopes

PHOENIX – Ramon Burgos set new career highs in both kills and total blocks, nabbing his second career double-double in 15th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team earned a come from behind five set win at Grand Canyon on Saturday night. The Mastodons went 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 18-16 to improve to finish the regular season 18-11, 8-8 (MIVA) while the Antelopes fell to 14-16, 5-11 (MIVA).
Multiple Mastodons set new career highs as Burgos led the way. Burgos' 23 kills eclipsed his previous career high of 19, set against Cal Baptist on January 4, 2014. Additionally, his 10 digs nearly doubled his previous career high of six, set against Ball State on January 31, 2014. Burgos finished the night hitting .541 on 37 attempts, with only three errors.
Collin Cohen earned a new career highs with 14 kills and three serving aces, while adding six blocks. Gabriel Quinones set a new career high with 10 digs, while Omar Rivera tied a season high of 58 assists. Luis Bertran earned a team-high 13 digs against the 'Lopes, while Alex Harthaller barely missed the double-double mark after earning 13 kills and nine digs.
The Antelopes ran out to an early 7-3 lead in the opening set, but the Mastodons rumbled back, cutting it to 15-13. Grand Canyon would once again increase its lead, going up 18-13, but a 6-2 run from IPFW would bring it to within one. The Blue and White looked to take control after knotting the set at 23 each, but the Antelopes would grab the final two points, winning the set 25-23. Cohen and Burgos each earned five kills in the first set while Rivera nabbed three blocks.
After falling behind 5-2 early in the second set, the 'Dons stormed back with six-consecutive points in an 8-1 run. Grand Canyon would continue to fight back, eventually cutting the Mastodon lead to 20-19, but the 'Dons would finish the set on a 5-1 run to knot the match at one a piece.
IPFW jumped to a 13-9 lead in the third set, but the Antelopes ran back to tie it at 18. After battling to regain momentum, the 'Lopes proved to be too much in the third set, taking it 25-22. Burgos, Cohen, and Harthaller each recorded three kills in the set, while Burgos and Rivera earned two blocks.
Trying to force a decisive fifth set, IPFW leaped to an 11-6 lead midway through the fourth set. Grand Canyon refused to go gently as the 'Lopes eventually took a 17-16 lead. Both teams would swap the next nine points, being tied at 21 late in the set. However, the 'Dons would finish on a 4-2 run to take the set 25-23 over GCU. Burgos earned five kills in the set, while Cohen managed four kills and three blocks. Bertran dug up four, while Rivera and Quinones each earned three in the set.
IPFW leaped to an early 4-0 advantage in the fifth set, but the Antelopes fought back to tie the set at five. Neither team was able to maintain momentum as they traded points most of the final set. After falling behind 13-12, the 'Dons took advantage of two Antelope miscues to go up 14-13. Grand Canyon wrestled its way back to take a 15-14 lead, but the Mastodons fended off a match point. GCU would get another chance to win the match after grabbing a kill for the next point, but IPFW would grab the last three points, highlighted with two Harthaller kills, to finish the come from behind win over the Antelopes. The final set saw the score tied 12 times with four lead changes as the Mastodons hit .444, led by Burgos' seven kills.
For the match, IPFW held a 67-61 advantage in kills and a 62-59 edge in assists. Grand Canyon earned a 7-5 upper hand in aces and a 47-41 advantage in digs, while the Mastodons dominated the net, earning a 32-19 advantage in blocks.
The Mastodons will host Lindenwood in the opening round of the MIVA Tournament on Friday, April 24. First serve between the 'Dons and Lions is set for 7 p.m. in the Hillard Gates Center.
