Four different Mastodon players collected a pair of hits on the day. Avery Nelson led the way going 2 for 6 with two RBI and a run scored. Kelly Pevely also finished 2 for 6 while adding an RBI and run. Morghyn Neal and Taylor Gordy Prescott each finished the afternoon 2 for 7 at the plate and scored a run.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard right away in game one, scoring in the top of the first inning. Gordy Prescott led off with a single through the left side. She stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Balthazor that was bobbled by the BGSU pitcher. Gordy Prescott then scored on an RBI groundout by Miranda Marion.
Bowling Green scored six times in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs with two outs in the inning. The 'Dons responded in the top of the third, tying the game with a five-run inning. Gordy Prescott again got things started with a leadoff single. After a fielder's choice put Balthazor on base, Marion reached on a Falcon error, putting runners on the corners. Another throwing error by BGSU allowed Balthazor to score.
Pevely stepped in and delivered a single to center, scoring Marion. Nelson followed with a single through the left side to bring home Neal. A groundout moved runners to second and third and a walk to Prestlee Cooper loaded the bases. Lindsay Burke came to the plate and connected for a single to bring home another run. The final Mastodon run of the inning came when Nelson scored on a passed ball.
The Falcons broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out RBI single before adding two more runs in the sixth. IPFW attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh, putting the go-ahead run on. With one out, Neal and Pevely reached on back-to-back singles. After an illegal pitch moved Pevely and pinch-runner Becca Beier to second and third, Nelson brought home Beier on an RBI groundout. Whitney Ennis walked and Cooper was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the final out was recorded to end the game.
Kaitlyn Biere took the loss for the 'Dons, throwing a complete game, allowing nine runs on 12 hits and striking out two.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons managed one hit off BGSU starter Briana Combs. Nelson broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth with a two-out single off a diving Falcon second baseman.
Bowling Green plated a run in the fourth with two outs and another run in the fifth.
Mastodon starter Sarah Lazarowich threw a complete game in the loss despite allowing a season-low two runs and scattering 10 hits.
IPFW returns to action at South Dakota State for a three-game series beginning April 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
