BROOKINGS, S.D. - In its final Summit League series of the season, the IPFW softball team got off to a rocky start as the Mastodons dropped a doubleheader to South Dakota State 4-0 and 10-0. The series finale is set for noon ET on April 26.
Whitney Ennis led the 'Dons on the afternoon, going 2 for 5, with a hit in each game. Taylor Gordy Prescott, Miranda Marion, and Kelly Pevely also added a hit in game one.
In the opener, SDSU scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third on a pair of hits.
The Mastodons had batters reach base in the first, third, and sixth innings but their best chance came in the top of the seventh. With one out, Pevely singled through the left side and Ennis followed with a single to left center. The 'Dons were unable to get the tying run to the plate though as the final two batters were retired.
IPFW starter Sarah Lazarowich took the loss, throwing a complete game while allowing four runs on four hits and striking out three Jackrabbits.
Game two was tough one for the Mastodons as they managed only one hit off the SDSU starter, a single by Ennis in the top of the fifth with one out. Gordy Prescott also reached base as she led off the game with a walk.
The Jackrabbits scored two runs in the bottom of the first, added a run in the second and seven in the third to take the nightcap.
Lazarowich suffered her second loss of the day, throwing two innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out two. Avery Nelson came on to pitch the final two innings and struck out two while surrendering three runs on three hits.
