4/24/2015 10:51:00 PM | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. - Trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the IPFW baseball team erupted for four runs to take a 5-2 win in the series opener against the Omaha Mavericks on Friday afternoon.
The win improves IPFW to 22-16 on the season, and the team has won its last six games, and has of its last 14 contests.
Kendall Whitman went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI's for IPFW, as the team's other four hits came from four different batters.
Cody O'Neal picked up the win in relief, striking out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning before Jake Weber got his eighth save of the season after holding the Mavericks without a hit in the ninth inning.
Neither team was able to gain any offensive footing in the opening portions of the game, as Whitman picked up IPFW's first hit of the game with one out in the fourth inning.,
In the bottom of the fourth Ryan Cate hit a two-run home run, providing all of the scoring in the game for the Mavericks.
A two-out Whitman double in the sixth inning, followed by a single from Shane Trevino cut the Mastodon deficit in half, but that would be the only run the team could muster over the first eight innings of the game.
After a fly-out opened the inning, Greg Kaiser hit an infield single, before pinch-hitter Sean Herberger hit a single to center field to put runners on the corners. A four-pitch walk loaded the bases, before a strikeout gave the Mastodons their second out of the inning. Brandon Soat followed with a walk to push across Kaiser for the game-tying run. Evan VanSumeren followed by reaching on a fielding error, seeing pinch-runner Kaleb Zimmer cross the plate. Whitman followed with a two-run single to center field, scoring Soat and Jon Timmermen and giving IPFW the 5-2 advantage.,
A pair of fly-outs were followed by a walk and a strikeout with Weber increasing his lead on the program's single-season save total.
The teams return to action for the second of three games, with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m. ET first pitch.
