Baseball Secures Series Win over Mavericks 10-6
4/25/2015 6:58:00 PM | Baseball
The Mastodons had 15 hits in the game, four off the bat of Kendall Whitman, and three each from Evan VanSumeren and Greg Kaiser. Brandon Soat and Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece each had two hits in the win. Soat reached base in all six of hit at-bats, drawing four walks and scoring five times. VanSumeren and Whitman each drove in four in the IPFW win.
Ryan Wells pitched the first seven innings of the game, striking out six and scattering seven hits and giving up four runs. Jake Weber added to his school record with nine saves, putting him one behind the IPFW career mark.
IPFW, now 23-16 on the season and 11-9 in Summit League play, opened the game with a walk to Soat and back-to-back singles from VanSumeren and Whitman to load the bases with no outs. Shane Trevino drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to put the Mastodons ahead 1-0. Omaha answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, before Whitman singled home Soat in the top of the third inning.
Another Omaha run in the bottom of the fourth inning put the teams in a 2-2 deadlock. An inning later Soat opened with a double, before back-to-back groundouts, the final one from Whitman, scoring the IPFW junior.
The Mastodons broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning when VanSumeren singled home Soat, Valenzuela-Reece, and Shannon Baker, putting IPFW ahead 6-2. Omaha kept the pressure on IPFW with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the gap to 6-4.
Looking to add some space between the teams, IPFW scored four times in the top of the ninth, the first on a Valenzuela-Reece single that scored pinch hitter Kaleb Zimmer. VanSumeren followed with a bases-loaded walk, scoring Kaiser, before Whitman doubled down the right field line, scoring Soat and Valenzuela Reece.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the margin proved too great to overcome, in the 10-6 IPFW win.
The two teams meet back again for the third and final game of the series starting at 2 p.m. ET.
