Miller Career Day Paces Mastodons in Seventh Straight Win
4/26/2015 10:37:00 PM | Baseball
Miller's previous career-high was 10 in a loss against Norfolk State, and the freshman had struck out nine over six innings in each of his last two outings, including giving up just two hits in the first meeting against Omaha.
Greg Kaiser was 3-for-4 in the game, while Evan VanSumeren added two hits and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Brandon Soat and VanSumeren each scored twice, while Trevino led the team with four RBI's.
Through three innings Miller struck out eight batters, while scoring first with a Soat solo home run in the top of the third. Omaha scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Collin Leif struck out swinging, and was thrown out at first base when the ball was in the dirt, allowing Alex Mortensen to score.
Kaiser opened the sixth inning with a double to right field, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Maverick third baseman. After a walk, Shannon Baker hit a sacrifice fly to score Kaiser, and giving IPFW the 2-1 advantage.
A walk to Soat, a single by VanSumeren, and a hit by pitch to Whitman loaded the bases before Trevino took a three-ball, one-strike pitch over the wall in left field for the team's third grand slam of the season to put IPFW ahead 6-1. The final Mastodon run came in the top of the eighth when VanSumeren earned a four-pitch walk, before advancing to second on a groundout, and then scoring on a Kaiser single.
Miller scattered four hits and walked two over his eight innings of work, while Dane Davis finished out the game by allowing one hit over one inning, striking out one.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, April 29, when the team hosts the Goshen Maple Leafs in a 3 p.m. first pitch at Mastodon Field.
