Fast Start Pushes Mastodons to Eighth Straight Win

IPFW improves to 25-16 on the season, while Goshen falls to 8-39.
Shane Trevino had a game-high three hits, going 3-for-3 at the plate, while Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece went 2-for-3. Evan VanSumeren, Kendall Whitman, and Greg Kaiser each drove in three, while Valenzuela-Reece scored three times.
The Mastodons wasted no time in scoring during the game, as Brandon Soat opened the game with a walk, before VanSumeren hit a home run to right field, pushing IPFW to a 2-0 lead. after a fly-out, Trevino singled and was followed by a Brock Logan walk, before Kaiser hit a three-run home run over the wall in left field.,
Goshen ended the shutout bid with a run in the top of the second, and a three-run top of the fourth closed the gap to one at 5-4.,
IPFW immediately responded with a two-run fourth inning when Jackson Boyce singled home Valenzuela-Reece, before scoring on a groundout from VanSumeren, putting IPFW ahead 7-4.
The hosts scored four times in the sixth, including the eventual game-winning run when Whitman hit a bases-loaded triple, scoring Valenzuela-Reece, Soat, and Grant Wilson, before scoring a batter later when Trevino singled to right field.
Two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Soat single that scored Valenzuela-Reece and a Herberger sacrifice fly that plated Boyce. Goshen scored four times in the top of the ninth, but could not overcome the Mastodon advantage.
Cody O'Neal picked up the win, pitching an inning and a third in relief, striking out two and allowing one hit. Zach Thompson picked up the loss for Goshen, pitching five and a third inning, striking out four and walking five.,
The Mastodons take their win streak on the road to Fargo, North Dakota, where the team will take on the North Dakota State Bison in a three-game series starting on Friday, May 1.
