Mastodons Fall to Bison in Slugfest
4/5/2015 5:00:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW had nine hits in the game, including two from Brandon Soat, while Soat drove in four of the team's six runs in the game. The Mastodons' seven runs came from seven different players.
Mastodon starting pitcher Evan Miller and NDSU starter Trent Keefer went the first four innings without allowing a run; however, the Bison offense erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth inning, putting the visitors ahead 8-0.
IPFW used back-to-back hits to open the bottom of the fifth inning, before Soat hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Zak Kellogg.
NDSU answered back with three runs in the top of the sixth before the Mastodons put up six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The frame started with a Kendall Whitman solo home run - his third of the season - setting the stage for Shane Trevino and Greg Kaiser who singled and doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. An RBI groundout from Kellogg scored Trevino, before Kaiser scored on a throwing error by the Bison shortstop. After a single from Jackson Boyce, Soat hit a three-run home run to left field to cut the gap to 11-7 after six innings.
The Bison followed with a run in the seventh, and four more in the eighth to push the visitors ahead 16-7. NDSU scored twice more in the top of the ninth to give the game its 18-7 final score.
Miller picked up the loss, pitching the first four and a third inning in the game, striking out two and giving up four hits and four earned runs. Dane Davis, Kyle Sorensen, Cody O'Neal, Nate White, and Kyle Orwig each saw time on the mound in the game.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, April 7 for a recently-scheduled contest against the Indiana Tech Warriors at 3 p.m. at Mastodon Field.
