Big Sixth Inning Pushes Mastodons to Mid-Week Win
4/7/2015 5:20:00 PM | Baseball
Four players - Evan VanSumeren, Kendall Whitman, Shane Trevino, and Greg Kaiser - each had two hits in the game, while VanSumeren scored twice and he and Whitman drove in a pair.
Orwig lasted five innings where he scattered four hits and struck out three, while three others - Cody O'Neal, Zach Dowden, and Jake Weber - closed out the game on the mound.
The Mastodons struck first in the bottom of the first inning when VanSumeren drew a one-out walk before coming around to score on a Whitman double, putting IPFW ahead 1-0 after the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Mastodons once again crossed the plate behind a one-out walk to VanSumeren, who advanced to second on the fourth ball that scooted to the backstop. After a groundout moved VanSumeren to third, Trevino singled up the middle to put IPFW ahead 2-0.
IPFW was held scoreless for the next two innings, before the Mastodons erupted in the sixth inning, drawing three straight walks to load the bases, before Brandon Soat singled to left field, scoring Shannon Baker. VanSumeren followed with a double to right field, scoring Jackson Boyce and Grant Wilson. Whitman followed with a sacrifice fly to score Soat, giving the Mastodons a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors responded with a run in the top of the seventh, before IPFW added two more runs, the first on a Kaiser double that chased home Trevino, before Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece singled home Kaiser two batters later.
The final inning and a half finished without a run, giving the Mastodons the 8-1 victory.
The Mastodons, now at an even 14-14 on the season, host the Omaha Mavericks in a three-game series in the coming weekend, with a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Mavericks on Friday, April 10.
