Mastodons Suffer Heartbreaking Overtime Loss in Season Opener
8/28/2015 11:05:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite a barrage of 20 shots during the match, the IPFW men's soccer team suffered an opening night 3-2 overtime loss to St. Joseph's (Ind.). The Mastodons outshot St. Joseph's 20-12, but the Puma goaltender was too much to handle as he made six stops against the 'Dons.
St. Joseph's opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play after Erick Turner received a through pass from Sebastian Quinteros, beating Raphael Kotzock in goal one on one.
The Mastodons were quick to respond, scoring just 70 seconds later. After Thilo Körperich sent a free kick into the box, Andy O'Donoghue finished with a header past the goalie. Both teams would enter the half knotted at one each.
Jose Rodriguez put the Blue and White up in the second half with a shot past the Puma goalkeeper one on one. Rodriguez received a through ball from Darren Doyle on the play, giving the 'Dons a 2-1 lead.
In the 60th minute, St. Joseph's would put in the equalizer, coming from Turner once again. Turner nabbed the ball from Alex Becker and finished to the far post. St. Joseph's would take the match in the first overtime after Lucas Moreira won a battle for the ball just above the box. Moreira then chipped the ball over Kotzock in the 97th minute of play.
Rodriguez led the Mastodons with five shots, placing three on goal. Austin West and Britt Watts each managed at least three shots. The Mastodons earned a 7-2 upper hand in corner kicks as each team combined for seven yellow cards.
IPFW returns to action on Sunday, August 30 with a non-conference match against Wester Michigan at 12:30 p.m., in the opening match of a soccer double-header with the women's team, who faces Ball State at 2:30 p.m.
