8/28/2015 11:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team celebrated the start of the 2015 season with a victory, as the Mastodons defeated Central Michigan 3-1 (31-29, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22). The game was the second on the day as a part of the 2015 IPFW Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place, in the first game Eastern Illinois defeated UIC 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16).
The 'Dons were led by Somer Johnson with a double-double, finishing with a match-high 21 kills to go along with 13 digs, both of which tied a career-high. Natalie Seiler made her first career start and came through for the Mastodons, ending the night with 10 blocks, eight kills, and a pair of aces. Seiler's 10 blocks are tied for third most by a sophomore in a four-set match.
Sarah Heckman ended the night with 10 kills and four blocks while Natasha Medic added seven kills. Making her first start in her first collegiate game, Madison Jaqua had a game-high 38 assists and three services aces. Fellow freshman Nicole Rightnowar added seven kills for the 'Dons.
Defensively, Olivia Hahn had a career- and match-high 27 digs, the most by an IPFW player since Kendall Wienkes had 30 at South Dakota State on October 27, 2012.
The opening set saw 12 tie scores and four lead changes as it went to extra points. With the score tied 23-23, the Mastodons fought off six Chippewa set points to stay alive. The 'Dons finished off Central Michigan on a kill by Rightnowar followed by back-to-back kills from Johnson.
IPFW opened the second set with a 15-12 lead, before Central Michigan tied the score with the next three point. The Chippewas closed out the set on a 10-5 run to take the frame.
CMU began the third set with the lead, but this time would be different for the 'Dons as they battled back to tie it at 10-10. Six straight Mastodon points gave them the lead for good, closing it out with a 15-7 advantage.
Another early Chippewa lead quickly vanished as IPFW scored five consecutive points to take the lead 6-3. The 'Dons held the lead until CMU scored three straight to take a 22-20 advantage. The underclassmen came up big in the end for the Mastodons as Seiler and Jaqua teamed up on a pair of blocks before Rightnowar, and eventually Jaqua closed it out with back-to-back kills.
IPFW gets right back to work with its final matches of the IPFW Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place against UIC at 1 p.m. and then Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m.
