Mastodons Shut Out Against Musketeers
9/22/2015 10:07:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CINCINNATI - Two goals in the first 20 minutes of action provided all of the scoring in the highly defensive battle between IPFW and Xavier, as the Musketeers topped the Mastodons 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
"The team played hard tonight against a strong team in Xavier," said IPFW head coach Mike Harper. "After giving them a goal in the first minute, we settle down and battled. The second half was a much better performance and we built some much-needed confidence for our Summit League opener."
The game was the second in a stretch of three consecutive matches for IPFW against teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Poll, as Bowling Green and Xavier are both receiving votes, and the team's next opponent - Omaha - is currently ranked 23rd overall. The teams combined for just 15 total shots - four on goal - as each team also had a dozen fouls.
Xavier, which is off of an upset the week earlier of then-second ranked Notre Dame and is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association National Poll, scored first in the game 49 seconds into the contest when Alex Ridsdale converted a bicycle kick that went over IPFW goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock's head.
Sixteen minutes later the Musketeers struck again when Matt Vasquenza beat Kotzock on the ground towards the left post to provide the final scoring in the match, as Xavier scored twice on its first three shot attempts.
Xavier, which has not allowed a goal since September 11, held the Mastodons off of the scoreboard for just the third time this season.
Zach Tom, Cameron Sinclair, Carmelo Morales, and Darren Doyle each took a shot for IPFW, Tom's coming on goal. Kotzock picked up one save in the losing effort, as the team's two goalkeepers combined for just two saves.
The Mastodons return to action on October 3 when the team travels to Omaha, Nebraska, to take on the Mavericks in an 8 p.m. ET kickoff.
