9/4/2015 9:01:00 PM | Men's Soccer
EDINBURG, Texas – A penalty kick from Britt Watts and a free kick from Austin West helped lift the IPFW men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Houston Baptist to open the Rio Grande Valley Invitational on Friday night. The victory improves the IPFW record to 1-2-0, while Houston Baptist falls to 1-2-0.
In yet another scrappy match, which saw four yellow cards and an ejection, the Mastodons took advantage of the Huskie fouls. After giving up a goal in the 24th minute, the 'Dons continued to battle back in the match. Watts converted on a penalty kick in the 36th minute of play to tie the match at one.
A Houston Baptist foul in the 77th minute led to a free kick from West, who managed to find the back of the net and give the Mastodons a 2-1 lead late in the match. Shortly after the free kick, HBU's Thilo Borgmann picked up his second yellow card of the match and an automatic ejection.
The Blue and White edged the Huskie 4-3 in shots on goal, while each goalkeeper made a pair of saves. The 'Dons also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
IPFW looks to capture the Rio Grande Valley Invitational when the 'Dons face UTRGV on Sunday at 8 p.m.
