Last Minute Goal Lifts Mastodons to UTRGV Invitational Title

EDINBURG, Texas – With under a minute remaining in regulation, a steal and quick goal from Austin West lifted the IPFW men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over UT-Rio Grande Valley and secured the UTRGV Invitational title for the Mastodons.
The win improved the Blue and White's record to 2-2-0, while the Vaqueros fall to 1-1-1. West, Corey Tom, Jose Rodriguez, and Thilo Körperich were all named to the All-Tournament team, as West was named the Offensive MVP of the invitational.
The Mastodons had a scare towards the end of the match when UTRGV's Archie Massen tied the match at 2-2. Massen tied the match off a rebound from a corner kick in 86th minute. However, West assured the 'Dons a win after his shot from just above the goalie's mid-circle.
The back-and-forth affair began early with the Vaqueros scoring in the 15th minute as a touch pass led to a Sami Tittanen goal just by Raphael Kotzock. The UTRGV would be the lone goal in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, the Tom brothers found each other on a corner kick, tying the match at one a piece. Zach Tom sent the corner in as Corey Tom finished the set by placing the ball in the back of the net.
IPFW would hold a one goal lead later in the half after Rodriguez scored from the left side of the box. Zach Tom passed it in to Rodriguez to record his second assist of the night.
Kotzock faced a barrage of second half shots from the Vaqueros, as UTRGV managed to fire off a total of 10 shots during the match with six coming in the last 45 minutes. However, the 6-foot-7 goalkeeper turned away four shots during the match to earn his second-consecutive win. UTRGV's Lee Castillo made five saves in the match, while the 'Dons managed a total of 17 shots.
IPFW returns home to the Hefner Soccer Complex when the Blue and White host Asbury on September 11 at 7 p.m.
