Men’s Soccer Aims to Continue Winning Ways against Asbury

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer team is looking to add to its two-match winning streak as the Mastodons host Asbury on Friday, September 11 at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Mastodons

The Mastodon men's soccer team enters the weekend after a sweep of Houston Baptist and UT Rio Grande Valley in the UTRGV Invitational. Austin West was named the Offensive MVP of the invitational after scoring both game-winning goals. West, Corey Tom, Jose Rodriguez, and Thilo Körperich were each named to the All-Tournament team. Both Rodriguez and West have two goals on the season, while Zach Tom has picked up two assists.

Scouting the Eagles

Asbury enters the match after stumbling to Union, 1-3, on September 8. The Eagles lone win came in a 5-4 thriller at Shawnee State on September 1. Ryan Metcalf leads Asbury with five points, coming off two goals and an assist. Four Eagles each have an assist on the year, while Brandon Patterson leads the defensive efforts in goal. Patterson has accumulated 17 saves, with a .739 save percentage, while managing a 2.36 goals against average.

Series History

The 'Dons won the only previous meeting against the Eagles, 1-0, last year in Wilmore, Kentucky. Corey Tom scored the lone goal in the match at Asbury.

The Mastodons topped the Eagles in the only previous meeting, coming out with a 1-0 shutout at Asbury. Corey Tom scored the lone goal in the match after former 'Don Mike Enghofer sent the ball in towards the net for the assist. The Mastodon defense was solid throughout the match as former 'Don Cody Schweitzer earned the shutout, only having to make a single save. IPFW outshot Asbury 13-4 in the previous match.

Last Time Out

The Blue and White came out with a thrilling 3-2 victory at UT Rio Grande Valley to earn a weekend sweep and capture the UTRGV Invitational title. Austin West was named the Offensive MVP of the invitational after scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of play. Zach Tom earned two assists against the Vaqueros, while Jose Rodriguez and Corey Tom each scored a goal.

Looking Ahead

IPFW remains at home when the 'Dons host Northern Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Norse lead the all-time series 2-13-5, with each team battling to a tie in each of the previous two matches.
