
IPFW Sweeps Doubleheader At Alabama A&M 7-6, 8-1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Senior Brandon Soat had two hits and two RBI to lead IPFW to a 7-6 non-conference baseball victory in 10 innings during the first game of a doubleheader at Alabama A&M University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Saturday at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Alabama. Senior Greg Kaiser added two RBI, while junior Jackson Boyce and senior Evan VanSumeren each had two hits and an RBI for the visiting Mastodons (3-0), who won the second game 8-1, though no information and/or statistics were made available. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber earned the pitching win in the first game. IPFW and Alabama A&M (0-3) will play the four-game weekend series finale Sunday, February 21 in Huntsville at 1 p.m.
In the opener, IPFW scored three runs on two hits and aided by a fielding error in the first inning, as Kaiser (1-5, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run single to score Soat (2-6, 2 RBIs) and VanSumeren (2-6, RBI). Soat had singled to open the game, while VanSumeren reached on an error. Senior Grant Wilson (1-2, RBI) added a sacrifice fly that plated redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-2), who had walked. The Mastodons added three more runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Boyce (2-5, RBI) had an RBI double to drive in Wilson, who had singled, while Soat and VanSumeren each added run-scoring singles that plated Boyce and Soat, respectively.
IPFW scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning when redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (0-4) walked with one out and later scored when Soat reached on an RBI fielder's choice play after the Mastodons had loaded the bases.
Junior Mitchell Ley started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 innings, yielding seven hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk. Junior Tanner McAninch tossed a scoreless inning of middle relief, allowing one hit, while redshirt-senior Brandon Pease pitched two-thirds of an inning, yielding three hits and three runs, two earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps pitched 1.1 shutout innings, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Weber (1-0) went the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with one strikeout for the pitching win.
Alabama A&M was led offensively by E.J. Watson (2-5, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, while Eugene Freeman (2-5, RBI) and Cole Thiede (2-5, RBI) each had two hits and one RBI for the Bulldogs, who scored three runs in the first and seventh innings. Brandon Marsonek pitched the final 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks in taking the mound loss.
