IPFW Falls At Alabama A&M In Series Finale 6-4

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Junior Jackson Boyce had two home runs and two RBIs as IPFW dropped a 6-4 non-conference baseball decision at Alabama A&M University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Sunday at Bulldog Field in Huntsville, Alabama. Senior Kendall Whitman added three hits and an RBI for the visiting Mastodons (3-1), while sophomore Damian Helm took the pitching loss in the series finale against the host Bulldogs (1-3). IPFW will play on the road at Little Rock of the Sun Belt Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas for another four-game series February 26-28, beginning with a single game on Friday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
Alabama A&M scored five runs in the first inning on two hits while aided by a fielding error and two walks before a grand slam home run by Tanner Ivey (3-4, 5 RBIs). The Bulldogs added a run in the third on two hits, including a run-scoring single from Ivey.
IPFW scored two runs in the second inning on four hits, including a two-out solo home run to left field by Boyce (2-5, 2 RBIs) and a two-out RBI single from senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4, RBI) to plate classmate Brandon Soat (1-5), who had doubled after Boyce's homer. The Mastodons added single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Boyce again blasted a solo home run, this time while opening the inning. In the sixth, Whitman (3-4, RBI) added a run-scoring double that scored Soat, who had reached on a fielding error.
Helm started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and six runs, five earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Senior Kyle Orwig tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits with six strikeouts and one walk, while junior Tanner McAninch pitched the final 1.0 shutout inning, yielding no hits with one walk.
Jordan Benford (1-0) started for Alabama A&M and pitched the first 4.2 innings, scattering five hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts and six walks to gain the mound win. Brandon Marsonek (1) tossed the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and one walk to earn the save.
