IPFW Wins Series Opener At Little Rock 4-2

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser had two hits and two RBIs, including a home run, to lead IPFW to 4-2 non-conference baseball victory at Little Rock of the Sun Belt Conference Friday at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock, Arkansas. Senior Brandon Soat and redshirt-senior Shane Trevino each added an RBI for the visiting Mastodons (4-1), while sophomore Evan Miller earned the pitching win, and redshirt-junior Jake Weber collected a save. IPFW and Little Rock (2-2) will play a doubleheader Saturday, February 27 in Arkansas at 1 p.m.
IPFW scored two runs in the second inning on three hits, including a solo home run to right field by Kaiser (2-3, 2 RBIs) – his first of the season -- to open the frame. Following the homer, senior Grant Wilson (0-1) drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-4) and the bases were loaded after a single by junior Jackson Boyce (1-4). Soat (1-4, RBI) collected the RBI on a walk that forced Wilson across home plate. The Mastodons added another run in the fifth on two more hits, as Soat and senior Evan VanSumeren (2-5) each singled to open the at-bat, before Soat crossed the plate courtesy of a one-out RBI ground ball by Trevino (0-5, RBI).
IPFW added a final run in the ninth inning when VanSumeren reached on a one-out double to right center field and scored on a two-out RBI double to center field by Kaiser.
Miller (1-0) started for IPFW and pitched 7.0 strong innings for his first win of the campaign, scattering three hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and five walks. Weber (2) tossed the final 2.0 innings to earn his second save this season for the Mastodons, yielding one hit and one earned run with two strikeouts and two walks.
Little Rock managed its lone run off of Miller in the seventh inning, as Zach Baker (1-4) doubled to left center field and scored on a one-out RBI ground ball by Cameron Knight (1-3, 2 RBIs). The Trojans also scored a run in the ninth, getting a run-scoring infield single from Knight that plated Nik Gifford (0-2), who had drawn a walk.
Cory Malcom (0-1) started for the Trojans and took the mound loss, pitching the first 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
