Mastodon Bats Explode for 21 Hits on Final Day in Mississippi

Caitlyn DeLong (4 for 7) and Kristen Zarate (4 for 6) led the Mastodons at the plate on the day. Amber Davis collected three hits, while Lauren Watson, Emily Olszewski, and Sierra Miranda all had two. DeLong led the way with three RBIs and two runs scored, including a home run. Zarate and Olszewski each added a pair of RBIs as Miranda led the 'Dons with three runs. All 10 IPFW players that went to the plate on the day collected a hit.
The morning game against Jackson State was an offensive battle as the two teams combined for 26 hits. JSU jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first and four more in the second. The Mastodons responded in force, scoring twice in the bottom of the second and six times in the third. DeLong hit a two-run homer in the second to put IPFW on the board. The 'Dons used a two-run double from Zarate, a two-run single from Olszewski, an RBI double by Watson, and an RBI single from DeLong in the third.
The Tigers scored a run in the fifth and put up another four-run inning in the sixth. The Mastodons got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Miranda, but Jackson State returned the favor in the seventh. IPFW put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh with one out but were unable to push across another run.
Elizabeth Snodgrass started the game in the circle for the 'Dons, allowing six runs, two earned, on nine hits in five innings of work. Demitra Burns took the loss after allowing three unearned runs. Sarah Lazarowich came on for the final two innings and surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out two.
Game two saw Southeastern Louisiana score all four of its runs in the first four innings with one in the second and three in the fourth, all of which were unearned.
The Mastodons put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Jenna Balthazor. The 'Dons pushed another run across in the bottom of the seventh on a groundout by Kelly Pevely, but they stranded the tying run at first.
Lazarowich pitched a complete game, surrendering four unearned runs on seven hits while striking out five Lion batters.
IPFW begins its Spring Break trip March 4 with the three-day USF Series - Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.
