IPFW Takes Weekend Finale At Little Rock 9-6
2/28/2016 6:17:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW scored two runs in the third inning on one hit, that being a two-run home run to right field by Trevino (3-5, 4 RBIs) that also scored senior Kendall Whitman (0-3), who had been hit-by-a-pitch with two outs. It was Trevino's second homer this season.
In the fourth, the Mastodons added three runs on two hits, aided by a fielding error, as well. Senior Evan VanSumeren (0-6, RBI) was credited with an RBI when he reached on the error and advanced a base on a play that allowed redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (0-1), who had walked to open the frame, to cross home plate. Trevino followed later in the at-bat with a two-run double to right field that plated both sophomore Zak Kellogg (2-3) and VanSumeren – Kellogg had reached earlier via a single.
In the fifth, IPFW added a run on one hit, loading the bases after a pair of one-out walks to Baker and Kellogg along with an infield single by junior Jackson Boyce (1-4), before a run-scoring sacrifice fly to left field by senior Brandon Soat (0-4, RBI). The Mastodons added three insurance runs in the eighth on three hits, including a two-run home run to left field by Kaiser (1-4, 2 RBIs) that also scored Trevino, who had singled with two outs, and a solo home run to right center field from Logan (1-5, RBI), following Kaiser's blast. It was Kaiser's second home this season, as well, the first for Logan.
Helm started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the win, scattering seven hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 3.1 innings of relief for the Mastodons, yielding three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps got the final two outs for the visitors, but allowed two hits and one earned run with no strikeouts and no walks.
Little Rock was led offensively by Ryan Scott (3-5, RBI) with three hits and an RBI, while Nik Gifford (2-5, 3 RBIs) added two hits and three RBIs. Both Scott and Gifford hit home runs for the hosts. Jacob Boggess (0-1) took the mound loss with 1.0 inning of relief for the Trojans, yielding two hits and three unearned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
