IPFW opened the game with two runs on two hits in the first inning, including an RBI single by senior Evan VanSumeren (1-5, RBI) that scored classmate Brandon Soat (0-5, RBI), who had struck out but reached base on a wild pitch. VanSumeren later crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly to left field by redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (0-3, RBI).
The Mastodons added two more runs in the third on two more hits, including a run-scoring single by Reece (2-4, RBI) that scored redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-5), who had doubled. Whitman (3-4, RBI), who had walked earlier ahead of Trevino's double, scored courtesy of another wild pitch.
IPFW added a run in the sixth on an RBI ground ball from Soat that plated junior Jackson Boyce (1-3), who had singled and advanced to third on a fielding error. The Mastodons added the game-winning run in the ninth inning when Whitman led off with his solo blast to right field after the hosts had scored two runs in the eighth to tie it at 5-5. It was Whitman's first homer of the season.
