IPFW Splits At UT Martin, Wins 4-2 After Falling 3-2

MARTIN, Tenn. – Senior Brandon Soat collected four hits on the day, redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser added three hits and classmate Shane Trevino hit a home run to lead IPFW to a split of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at UT Martin Saturday at Skyhawk Park in Martin, Tennessee. The Mastodons (8-3) won the nightcap, 4-2, after dropping the opener, 3-2. IPFW and the Skyhawks (3-8) will play the four-game, weekend series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. in Martin, Tennessee.
In the second game, IPFW scored two runs in the sixth inning on two hits, aided by an error. Senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4, RBI) had an RBI single that scored junior Jackson Boyce (2-4, RBI), who had also reached on a single, while Kaiser (1-3, RBI) provided a sacrifice fly that plated Soat (3-4), who had been hit-by-a-pitch.
The Mastodons added a run in the eighth on two hits, aided by two errors. Soat reached on an infield single and later crossed the plate courtesy one of the errors. In the ninth, IPFW received a run-scoring infield single from Boyce that drove home senior Kendall Whitman (0-1), who had been hit-by-a-pitch.
Senior Trevor Storie (2-1) started for IPFW and pitched the first 7.0 innings for the victory, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts and two walks. Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease tossed 1.0 shutout inning of relief, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin (1) earned the save with the final 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts and one walk.
