3/6/2016 6:11:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW trailed 3-0 through four innings before scoring two runs in the fifth, only to have UT Martin score six runs in the fifth to take a 9-2 advantage. The Mastodons could not get closer than five runs over the duration of the game. In the fifth, IPFW scored two runs on three hits, including an RBI double down the left field line by Trevino (3-5, 2 RBIs) that scored senior Brandon Soat (2-3, RBI), and a sacrifice fly to center field by Whitman (1-3, 3 RBIs) that scored redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (1-4). Soat and Kaiser had each singled.
The Mastodons added two more runs in the sixth on two hits while aided by an error, as well. Soat doubled down the left field line to plate both redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-3) and junior Jackson Boyce (0-3). Baker had singled, while Boyce had reached base on a fielder's choice.
IPFW scored in the seventh courtesy of Trevino's fourth home run this season, a solo blast center field while leading-off the inning. The Mastodons added two final runs in the eighth on Whitman's two-run single that drove home Boyce and Soat, who had walked and been hit-by-a-pitch, respectively.
Sophomore Damian Helm (1-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 innings while taking the setback, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs with four strikeouts and four walks. Junior Tanner McAninch was the most effective of three relief pitchers for the Mastodons with the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and two walks.
UT Martin was led at the plate by Ryan Helgren (2-5, 4 RBIs) with two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Dalton Westfall (2-1) earned the mound win for the Skyhawks with the first 5.0 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and six walks.
