In game one, IPFW scored two runs in the first inning on two hits for the early advantage, but that was it for the scoring in the opener. Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (2-5) singled with two outs in the first and classmate Shane Trevino (2-5, 2 RBIs) promptly followed with a two-run home run to right field for his team-leading fifth homer this season. The Mastodons had several opportunities to score again, but stranded 11 runners throughout the contest, including three in the second, as well as two each in the third, fourth and sixth innings.
Junior Mitchell Ley (0-1) started for IPFW and pitched the first 2.1 innings while taking the setback, allowing seven hits and six earned runs with one strikeout and two walks. Classmate Tanner McAninch tossed 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings with one strikeout and no walks, while sophomore Damian Helm pitched the final 4.0 innings for the Mastodons, scattering two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk.
Ohio was led offensively in game one by Rudy Rott (3-4, RBI) with three hits and an RBI, and John Adryan (1-3, 3 RBIs) with a three-run home run in the third inning when the Bobcats scored six runs. IPFW had just four hits in the contest, including one single each by redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-2), seniors Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-3) and Kendall Whitman (1-3), along with Kaiser (1-4).
