INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Sophomore Zak Kellogg collected the only RBI of the day for IPFW during a 4-1 collegiate baseball setback at Butler University of the Big EAST Conference Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis. Senior Kyle Orwig suffered the pitching loss for the visiting Mastodons (9-8) against the host Bulldogs (5-10). IPFW will open Summit League action this weekend with a three-game road series at Omaha, March 18-20, in Omaha, Nebraska.
IPFW fell behind at Butler 2-0 after one inning, and trailed 3-0 through four innings, before scoring a run in the seventh to make it a 3-1 contest. In the seventh, Kellogg (0-2, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-4), who had singled with one out, while redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (1-3) reached on a two-out single, before classmate Shannon Baker (0-2) also walked to load the bases. The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh, as well, for the final three-run margin.
Orwig (0-2) started for the Mastodons and took the mound loss with just one-third of an inning, yielding three hits and two earned runs with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Damian Helm tossed 3.2 innings of early relief, allowing three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and one walk. IPFW finished the game with four other relievers who each pitched 1.0 inning, including freshman Adam Neal, redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps, along with juniors Tanner McAninch (1 ER) and Jordan Martin.
Butler was led offensively by Tyler Houston (2-3, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs. Quinton Miller (1-2) started for the Bulldogs and pitched the first 6.2 innings for the win, scattering four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks.
