3/18/2016 6:09:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW scored a run in the second inning when redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (2-4) singled to open the frame, moved to second on a single by Baker (3-5) and on to third via a single from senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-3) that load the bases. Freshman Brandon Yoho (1-4, RBI) followed with an RBI fielder's choice to third base that scored Trevino.
The Mastodons added two runs in the fourth courtesy a two-run home run to right field by Logan (1-3, 2 RBIs) that also plated Trevino, who had singled. IPFW scored two more runs in the fifth via another two-run home run to right field, this time from Soat (1-5, 2 RBIs) that also scored junior Jackson Boyce (1-4), who had doubled down the left field line.
IPFW scored a run in the sixth inning when senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4, RBI) produced a run-scoring single with two outs that drove home Yoho, who had reached on a single, as well, to open the frame. The Mastodons added a final run in the ninth when senior Grant Wilson (0-1) reached on a fielding error in center field that allowed redshirt-freshman Alec Reuille (1-1), who had doubled down the left field line as a pinch hitter with one out, to cross the plate.
Miller (2-1) started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.2 innings and took the loss, allowing five hits and nine runs, eight earned, with two strikeouts and seven walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed 1.2 innings of relief, yielding three hits and two unearned runs with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior Kyle Orwig also pitched 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Redshirt-junior Dru Sebastian pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout and one walk.
Omaha led 2-0 after one inning, 5-1 after two, 6-1 after three, 9-3 after four, 9-5 after five, 11-6 after six and 14-6 after seven innings. The Mavericks were led offensively by Cole Gruber (3-4, 3 RBIs) with three hits and three RBIs and Clayton Taylor (1-4, 3 RBIs) with one hit and three RBIs.
