IPFW Drops Doubleheader At Omaha 7-0, 9-5
3/20/2016 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
In game two, IPFW scored a run in the first inning when senior Brandon Soat (0-4) walked to open the nightcap and later crossed the plate courtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (0-3, 2 RBIs). The at-bat included singles by VanSumeren (4-5, 2 RBIs) and redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (3-4), as well, to load the bases with no outs, but a pair of strikeouts following the sac fly left both runners on base.
The Mastodons added three runs in the fifth, getting a two-run double to left center from VanSumeren that scored redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-4) and junior Jackson Boyce (1-3). Baker and Boyce had each doubled, as well, while VanSumeren crossed the plate via another RBI sacrifice fly from Trevino, this time to center field. IPFW scored a final run in the seventh when VanSumeren, who had singled, scored on an RBI single by senior Kendall Whitman (1-4, RBI).
Senior Trevor Storie (2-3) started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.0-plus innings in defeat, allowing seven hits and eight runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Junior Jordan Martin followed with 3.0 innings, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Omaha was led offensively by Collin Leif (2-3, 3 RBIs) with two hits and three RBIs, and Clayton Taylor (2-5, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, while Corey Binger (4-0) started and gained the pitching win with the first 4.1 innings, scattering six hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and two walks.
In game one, IPFW was limited to seven singles, including two each by VanSumeren (2-4) and Whitman (2-4). The Mastodons stranded eight baserunners during the opener, including two each in the third and ninth innings.
Junior Mitchell Ley (0-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.2 innings in defeat, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Damian Helm followed with 2.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps tossed 1.1 innings, yielding two hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease went the final 1.0 shutout inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
Omaha was led offensively by Riley Herold (2-4, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, and Grant Suponchick (1-3, 2 RBIs) with one hit and two RBIs, while Sam Murphy (2-0) started and gained the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings, scattering five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
