IPFW Wins Summit League Series Opener At Oral Roberts 6-3

IPFW took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Soat (2-3) and senior Evan VanSumeren (2-2, RBI) drew back-to-back walks to open the game, and with two outs, Soat crossed the plate on an RBI double down the right field line by classmate Kendall Whitman (2-4, RBI). The Mastodons made it 2-0 with another run in the third, unearned, as Soat scored again … this time on a double-play ground ball from redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (0-5, RBI). Soat had singled to open the frame before advancing to second on a throwing error.
IPFW scored two runs in the fifth inning to lead 4-3. Soat once-again got things started with a lead-off single and crossed the plate via an RBI ground ball by Kaiser. VanSumeren also scored again after reaching on a single, as well … crossing the plate on a run-scoring single from redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (2-5, RBI). The Mastodons added two more runs in the sixth for a three-run advantage that would stand. Senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (2-5) singled to open the frame and later scored courtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by VanSumeren. Redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (2-5) also crossed the plate, unearned via a throwing error, after reaching earlier during the at-bat on a single.
Miller (3-1) started for IPFW and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the victory, scattering three hits and three runs, all earned, with a season-high nine strikeouts and six walks. He got out of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth with a strikeout looking, and stranded two runners each in the first and third innings with inning-ending strikeouts swinging, respectively. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, yielding two hits with one strikeout and two walks. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber (4) pitched the final 1.0 inning for the Mastodons to earn the save, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and no walks, retiring three-straight batters with a fly ball and two ground balls to end the game.
Oral Roberts was led offensively by Brent Williams (1-3, 2 RBIs), who had a two-run single in the third inning. Bryce Howe (1-1) started for the Golden Eagles and pitched the first 4.1 innings for the setback, allowing seven hits and four runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and three walks.
